Works About Curriculum Vitae Contact

Iren Gule lives and works in Øksnes, Norway and in the city of Valencia, Spain. Her artistic work is exploratory and experimental where she works in a variety of media, including Painting, Textile, Object/Sculpture and Installation, and examines the relationship between living beings, the human being and Nature. The body and nature as places of constant change, creation and destruction, new and old – traces, memories, vulnerability and attempts at protection. She often takes her own history as a starting point and early on used objets trouvé in her works, sometimes from her own family and her life, but also recycled materials that contain traces of people, anonymity, chance, decay, loss and memories.

Gule highly values the basic intuitive idea and the integrity of the work. This is strongly reflected in the process and in her reverence for, and treatment of, the materials which express a sense of unpolished honesty where the materials' natural patina and color resonance is preserved as it arises in the processing - breakdown and reconstruction. The work thus becomes the carrier of the scars, wounds, colours, structures and traces that arise and gives the work its character.

Her work contains a wealth of symbolic associations across cultures to examine the construction of the religious, of elements of mythology and a kind of subjective archeology - personal history - and our relationship to time, meaning our relationship to birth, life and death – our vulnerability and our attempts at protection.
